Learn Fly Tying
Anglers say there’s no greater thrill than catching a fish on a fly you tied yourself—and the best way to experience that is to start tying. The Malden Anglers invite you to join our weekly fly tying groups during the off-season, where beginners and experienced tiers come together in a relaxed, welcoming environment. You’ll learn by doing—handling real materials, picking up proven techniques, and getting guidance from seasoned anglers—while enjoying the camaraderie of others on the same journey. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to improve, our sessions are designed to be fun, practical, and rewarding, helping you build the skills and confidence to bring your own flies to life.
Introduction to Fly Fishing
Are you new to fly fishing? The Malden Anglers offer introductory courses designed especially for beginners, held in May and again in late summer. These five-session evening programs guide you step by step—from selecting the right rod and reel to understanding leaders, tippets, flies, fish species, and essential knots, along with the ethics and etiquette that define the sport. Sessions are hands-on, relaxed, and filled with plenty of time for questions and discussion, all in a safe and friendly learning environment. You’ll be guided by passionate instructors who bring both experience and personality to every class. By the end of the course, you’ll have the confidence to put your new skills into practice at Patkin Pond and truly begin enjoying the art and excitement of fly fishing.
Fly Casting Instruction Par-Excellence
Each spring, the Malden Anglers host a special fly casting clinic with Sheila Hassan of Cast90, one of the region’s most accomplished and respected instructors. Sheila is a Fly Fishers International Master Certified Casting Instructor—one of fewer than 250 in the world—and director of the renowned Wulff School of Fly Fishing. She brings decades of experience teaching casters of all levels, from beginners learning the fundamentals to experienced anglers refining accuracy, distance, and efficiency. An accomplished angler and author, Sheila combines deep technical knowledge with a clear, engaging teaching style that makes immediate improvements possible. These sessions are always in high demand and fill quickly, so early sign-up is strongly encouraged.
Guest Speakers
One of the highlights of Malden Anglers membership is our monthly guest speaker series, held as part of our dinner meetings. Each month brings a fresh perspective on fly fishing—covering techniques, fly patterns, destination waters, and innovations in gear. These sessions are interactive, with plenty of time for questions, discussion, and the sharing of ideas among anglers who share the same passion. In addition to our monthly speakers, we occasionally host special presentations with sought-after guests who are not always easy to schedule, giving members access to unique knowledge and experience. Past guests have included well-known fly tyer Tim Flagler, angler Denny Rickett, along with guides, rod builders, and industry innovators. It’s a great way to keep learning, hear new ideas, and stay connected to the sport.
